Abstract

Even though premium and diesel prices have fallen while people's purchasing power is also relatively low due to the global crisis which is still being felt today, it turns out that most commodities have not experienced a decline in price, in fact some commodities in January 2009 actually experienced an increase. Some of the causes of rising prices include limited stocks, low agricultural production due to flooding and unfavorable weather for the marine fisheries sector. Meanwhile, the decline in the price of fuel oil (BBM) has caused a decrease in intra-city transportation and ferry transportation rates. Several other commodities also experienced price declines, but less significantly, so that in January 2009, Bandar Lampung City experienced inflation of 0.98 percent. Inflation in Bandar Lampung City is ranked 7th out of 66 cities where price developments are observed. Overall, 34 cities experienced inflation and 32 cities experienced deflation. The highest inflation occurred in Manokwari at 3.84 percent and the lowest deflation occurred in Manado at 1.35 percent.

Based on the calculation of the consumer price index (CPI), inflation occurred due to an increase in the index for groups of goods and services with the following amounts: the foodstuffs group rose by 3.21 percent, the ready-made food, beverages, cigarettes & tobacco group by 1.85 percent, housing, water, electricity, gas & fuel group 1.18 percent, clothing group 0.34 percent and education, recreation and sports group 0.63 percent. The health services group and transportation group experienced deflation of 0.04 percent and 3.47 percent respectively.

Some commodities that contribute to inflation include spinach, kale, house rent, purebred chicken meat, clove cigarettes, fruit tomatoes, filtered clove cigarettes, green mustard greens, granulated sugar and vegetable tomatoes. The inflation rate for Bandar Lampung City for the calendar year is the same as the current month's inflation, namely 0.98 percent. Meanwhile, "year on year" inflation (January 2009 to January 2008) was 14.76 percent.
