Abstract

The conditions in May 2011 were almost the same as April 2011, in May 2011 the food ingredients group contributed the most to the formation of deflation in the city of Bandar Lampung. Meanwhile, the groups that are holding back the rate of deflation are the clothing group and the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel groups. The decline in prices of various commodities in the foodstuffs group resulted in deflation in Bandar Lampung City of 0.03 percent.

There were three groups in May 2011 that experienced a decline in the index which caused deflation, namely the foodstuffs group, ready-made foods, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco, and the health group. Three other groups experienced an increase in the index which held back the rate of deflation, namely the clothing group, the housing, water, electricity, gas & fuel group, and the transport, communications & financial services group. Deflation in Bandar Lampung City was ranked 52nd out of 66 cities where price developments were observed. A total of 51 cities experienced inflation and 15 cities experienced deflation. The highest inflation occurred in Ambon at 1.66 percent, while the lowest inflation was in Kediri, Denpasar and Mataram at 0.02 percent. The largest deflation occurred in Tarakan at 1.14 percent, while the lowest deflation was in Bandar Lampung at 0.03 percent.

Based on the calculation of the consumer price index (CPI), deflation occurred due to a decline in the index in the food expenditure group by 0.29 percent, the health group fell by 0.26 percent, and the ready-made food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group fell by 0.15 percent. The education, recreation and sports group experienced no change in index, while the clothing group experienced an index increase of 0.59 percent, the housing group increased 0.17 percent, and the transportation group 0.05 percent.

Several commodities that dominantly contributed to deflation include shallots, red chilies, coconuts, bricks, granulated sugar, garlic, green chilies, potatoes, cooking oil, shampoo and fresh goldfish. Calendar year (point to point) inflation in May 2011 was 0.97 percent, while year on year (yoy) inflation in Bandar Lampung City was 9.64 percent.
