Abstract

February 2012, the city of Bandar Lampung experienced deflation. Food group; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel groups; and health groups, contributed to the formation of deflation in Bandar Lampung City. Meanwhile, the groups that contributed to holding back the rate of deflation in February 2012 were the ready-made food, beverage, cigarette and tobacco groups; transport, communications and financial services group; and clothing groups. Changes in prices of various commodities in the six expenditure groups resulted in deflation in Bandar Lampung City of 0.11 percent.

Three expenditure groups in February 2012 experienced a decline in the index which caused deflation, three groups experienced an increase in the index, and one group experienced no change in the index. Deflation in Bandar Lampung City was ranked 44th out of 66 cities where price developments were observed. Of the 66 cities, 40 cities were observed to experience inflation, the highest inflation occurred in Mataram at 1.73 percent, while the lowest inflation was in Tangerang at 0.03 percent. And 26 other cities experienced deflation, the highest deflation was in Jambi at 1.29 percent and the lowest was in Palu at 0.04 percent.

Based on the calculation of the consumer price index (CPI), deflation occurred due to a decline in the index in the foodstuffs group, down 0.98 percent; the health group fell 0.26 percent; and the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group fell 0.08 percent. Meanwhile, the groups that experienced an increase in the index were the clothing group, which rose 0.98 percent; the prepared food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group rose 0.46 percent; and the transport, communications and financial services group rose 0.30 percent. Meanwhile, the education, recreation and sports groups did not experience changes in the index.

Several commodities that dominantly contributed to deflation include red chilies, fresh mackerel, tomatoes, cucumbers, fresh squid, cassava leaves, fresh trevally, green chilies, kale and purebred chicken meat. Calendar year (point to point) inflation for February 2012 in Bandar Lampung City was 0.52 percent, while year on year (yoy) inflation for February 2012 was 3.21 percent.
